Handicapped Parking Tag (Information Only)
Reserved Parking For People With Disabilities
Who is eligible for vehicle plates for disabled persons or a parking permit for disabled persons?
The New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law defines the permanent disabilities that qualify. If you have a permanent disability that qualified, you can get vehicle plates for reserved parking from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or a parking permit from your local government. It is illegal to park in a parking space reserved for persons with disabilities if you do not have the correct vehicle plates or parking permit.
How do I get a parking permit for disabled persons?
You and your healthcare provider (M.D., DO, DPM or NP) can complete the application form MV-664.1. Bring the form to the issuing agency in your locality (normally the office of your city clerk, town clerk or village clerk). There is no fee for a permit. Remember that the DMV does not issue the parking permits.
Temporary Permits
Temporary permits may only be issued to customers who have a temporary disability that requires the use of an assisting device. Examples of an assisting device include, but are not limited to, a walker, cane, brace, crutch or wheelchair. This restriction is based on Section 1203-a of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic law. If the customer can ambulate without the aid of an assisting device, he or she is not eligible for a temporary permit.
